The beginnings of Drop Dead Gorgeous took place when 6 friends gathered in a small loft apartment on the West side of Atlanta. We weren’t professionals nor a recognizable collection of iconic social leaders. But the half-dozen creative souls in the room that night knew we could make a difference. The idea was simple: take an issue our hearts were broken over in conviction- child sex trafficking- and apply the areas of our creative and social influence to make a difference in the lives of young women being horrifically violated.
We discussed a lot of options. We threw around a lot of ideas. We drank a little wine. And we played with a few different names. We kept coming back to some common interests we all shared- beauty. fashion. nightlife. music. Not things one would normally associate with saving the world. But honest, every-day aspects of our lives that we enjoyed... and that we knew we held in common with many others in our city.
There were many name suggestions brought to the table. Polite words and soft adjectives that would make soccer moms and church folks wowed with the idea of joining our cause. But after an hour or so we just knew these didn’t work.
As the room was starting to grow silent and the issue was most in doubt, our friend James simply started down a different path. Throwing caution to the wind, he brought up a simple line that we’ve all used at one point or another... often involving a striking creature of beauty we might see across the sidewalk, in the club, or on the runway.
It isn’t polite. It isn’t quiet. Rather it is an exclamation. A heartfelt statement of conviction. Not irony but rather a reminder. A challenge. An idea that cannot afford to be left short at two words but must be completed in three. The inner desire of a woman’s heart and humanity’s justice.
Drop Dead Gorgeous. A simple call to turn our passion for beauty back to humanity.
